Arcadia Dial-a-Ride service to return to seniors, disabled after years of students "monopolizing" the service. On July 1, the fare will increase from 25 cents to 50 cents per ride and will have new fixed routes. The Dial-a-Ride will be for seniors over 62 years old and riders who are disabled.

Rides are hard to find for seniors. Dial-a-Ride, meant for home-bound elderly, being misused shuttling school children. In 2014 consultant group IBI Group recommended three changes--new fixed routes for the general public, a shuttle service from the Metro Gold Line station to popular locations in the city, and a return to Dial-a-Ride service to seniors and disabled. The changes were planned to coincide with the Gold Line opening in march but after hearing concerns from students and parents, city officials agreed not to cut off the Dial-a-Ride service to the general public until the end of the school year.

Mass transit riders take preview run on 11.5 mile Gold Line Foothill extension from is current terminus at Sierra Madre Villa Station (in Pasadena) to the six new stations to the east, including Arcadia Station, Monrovia Station, Duarte Station, Irwindale Station, Downtown Azusa Station, and Azusa Pacific University/Citrus College Station. The new rail cars are stainless steel, made by Kinkisharyo, Model P3010.

Riders head to Pasadena, not Los Angeles. Ridership on the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension is surpassing expectations. The east Pasadena to Azusa/Glendora extension, which opened March 5 is carrying 4000-5000 riders on weekdays and 3800 to 4000 on Saturday and Sunday. 18 percent of the riders from Arcadia Station went to Pasadena. Work continues on Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension project. Workers installed a 130-foot-high steel cage that will make up a portion of a rapid transit bridge spanning the eastbound 210 Freeway between Baldwin Avenue and Santa Anita Avenue. When complete, the 584-foot-long, $18.6 million Metro Gold Line bridge will be buttressed by columns designed to resemble Native American baskets. The bridge work is expected to be completed in the summer of 2012, while the entire 11.5-mile extension is due to be finished 2015. The bridge contractor is Skanska USA Civil. Construction of the rest of the line may be delayed due to problems with Monrovia's Redevelopment Agency.

Metro Foothill Gold Line crossing gates snarl traffic. Faulty part that was recalled worldwide blamed for malfunctions. There are 14 at-grade crossings throughout the 5 cities along the new extension: Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and Azusa (has two stations). Arcadia has only one at-grade crossing, but some cars were stuck at the crossing for 5 minutes or more. Each of the cities is working closely with Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority to synchronize traffic signals with train crossings to improve traffic flow.

Local transit authorities are preparing to move forward with the Gold Line Foothill Extension to the Azusa-Glendora border and local cities are planning to place residential and commercial developments along the line. Those developments are intended to prepare for future population growth. The first phase of the extension is slated to be completed by 2014, adding new stops in Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and Azusa. Some plans near those stops could be scaled back due to the down economy. Arcadia officials are looking to build commercial developments centered on a planned station just east of Santa Anita Avenue. Arcadia's challenge will be land acquisition. Because Arcadia has ordinances limiting the use of eminent domain, Arcadia officials have to rely on negotiating land deals, a difficult process with limited redevelopment funds.

In the first 7 week phase, eastbound Huntington Drive at Second Avenue in Arcadia, has been narrowed to one lane as the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works prepares to begin a seismic retrofit of the overhead train trestle (bridge) for the future Metro Gold Line. During phase 2, westbound Huntington Drive at Second Avenue will be reduced to one lane. It should take 4 months to complete the retrofit.

Gold Line bridge work to cause more closures. The construction remains on schedule and will require as many as 20 late-night full eastbound lane closures in the next two months. The final abutment, or end of the bridge, will be poured next week. The full lane closures generally occur from midnight to 5:00 AM, during which traffic will be detoured off the 210 Freeway at Baldwin Avenue and routed along Foothill Boulevard to Santa Anita Avenue.
