Revisiting Anita Baldwin. Margaux Viera (photo) of Riverside, the great-great-great granddaughter of Arcadia founder Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, has unexpectedly come into possession of some personal items that belonged to Anita M. Baldwin, the only daughter born to Lucky Baldwin and his third wife, Jane Virginia Dexter. The items were discovered by a farmer on a rural, central Nevada ranch once owned by the Baldwin estate. The items include Anita Baldwin's daily journal from 1935, a gold calligraphy pen and Art Deco glass bottle used as an inkwell, an address book with her name and signature, a leather passport holder with her name and a wallet containing several of her identification and membership cards. Inglewood's Hollywood Park racing history going to auction. The track recently closed for good, but the 75-year-old Southern California landmark is having a 2-day auction of miscellaneous surplus equipment. "All of the good merchandise--the good furniture, paintings, memorabilia--has been moved to Santa Anita Park and to other racetracks, and what they have here is the dregs," said Tijuana-based antique dealer Antonio Vibrillo.

Gold Line bridge work to cause more closures. The construction remains on schedule and will require as many as 20 late-night full eastbound lane closures in the next two months. The final abutment, or end of the bridge, will be poured next week. The full lane closures generally occur from midnight to 5:00 AM, during which traffic will be detoured off the 210 Freeway at Baldwin Avenue and routed along Foothill Boulevard to Santa Anita Avenue.

The City of Arcadia is using $646,000 in federal stimulus funds for repairs, repaving, re-striping and adding bicycle lanes on Santa Anita Avenue, north of Foothill Boulevard. The city has received $534,000 in stimulus money to retrofit City Hall with an energy-efficient heating and cooling system and $80,000 for equipment and training for its police department. Sometime in late spring, officials plan to widen intersections along Santa Anita Avenue, adding turn lanes or through lanes at Foothill Boulevard, Live Oak Avenue and Duarte Road.

Arcadia city council accepts gift of a bronze statue of Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, founder of Arcadia, from his descendant Margaux Viera. Article erroneously states that she is the granddaughter of Elias J. Baldwin. In her proposal to the City of Arcadia, she states that she is the great-great-great-granddaughter of Baldwin.

Yesterday Arcadia city officials celebrated the groundbreaking of a nearly $12.5 million Gold Line bridge that will be built over Santa Anita Avenue, south of Colorado Boulevard. Starting on or near May 1, the new bridge's construction, which would take 7 months, will cause lane closures on Santa Anita Avenue, disruptions and detours, including not being able to enter In-N-Out Burger from Santa Anita Avenue for 4 months. The bridge is being paid for by a voter-approved bond measure and city transportation funds.
