10-year-old Arcadia resident Natalia Sanchez-Nigolian started a "Save the Trees" fund to maintain trees on Paloma Drive, where she lives. She plans to start an environmental club at Hugo Reid Elementary.
26 local schools earn high honors, the 2023 California Distinguished Schools award, including Hugo Reid Elementary, Camino Grove Elementary, Highland Oaks Elementary, Rancho Learning Center, Baldwin Stocker Elementary, Holly Avenue Elementary and Longley Way Elementary School from the Arcadia Unified School District.
The 65 year old statue of Hugo Reid created by Preston Prescott may be moved from Arcadia County Park to a spot between the Ruth and Charles Gilb Arcadia Historical Museum and the Arcadia Community Center. The City Council will have to approve $57,362 contract for its removal.

Approximately 147 students who have attended Hugo Reid will be transferred to Holly Avenue next year if the proposal is passed by the school board. The transfer and boundary change are designed to alleviate over-crowding at Hugo Reid.

Hugo Reid Adobe (Before Restoration) --Built in 1840, the Hugo Reid Adobe was the first permanent structure built on Rancho Santa Anita. It was here, overlooking the lake where Hugo Reid had built his adobe some 70 years previously, that Lucky Baldwin died in 1909. In 1959-60, the Adobe was restored. It remains where it has always been, just south of the lake in what is now the Arboretum.
The Arcadia City Council has authorized a project to build concrete sidewalks adjacent to Camino Grove, First Avenue, Hugo Reid Primary, Dana and Holly Avenue schools.
Arcadia's Teacher of the Year, Marsha Burkhalter, a sixth grade teacher at Hugo Reid Elementary, is a contender for the 1989 California Teacher of the Year.

The Arcadia Tournament of Roses Association Royal Court includes Joy Blackburn, Sandi Thistlewaite, Kristy Mutschler, Cathy Reid, Theresa Van Dusen. They will ride on the Arcadia float in the Pasadena Rose Parade on January 1, 1977. The queen has not been chosen yet.
Arcadia Unified School District hires four new principals. They are Tom Bruce (First Avenue Middle School), Teresa Oakdale (Holly Avenue Elementary School), Ben Acker (Foothills Middle School), and Lauren Leahy (Hugo Reid Elementary School). The new hires come soon after David Vannasdall became the district superintendent in May.
Arcadia Unified School District upgraded and improved four campuses over summer break, costing nearly $10 million. Funded under the district's $218 million Measure I Bond, the four schools that got updated classrooms and facilities are Arcadia High School, Camino Grove Elementary, Hugo Reid Elementary, and Highland Oaks Elementary schools.
Arcadia Unified School District will purchase 2 portable classrooms at well under the expected cost of $60,000 each. The classrooms will be installed at Hugo Reid Elementary School.
