Aerial view due south from a position almost directly over sharp curve of Colorado Street. Showing in this photo are the Track and Club House on a day of large attendance, the stables, and a training track. All along Huntington Drive and Colorado Street young trees have been planted. Old-time resident Reid Greer says that the large tree at the very left edge of photo about 2 1/2 in. from bottom is same tree as seen in photo #654, on flat ground just below knolls seen here, and therefore he places homes of Indians on ranch at this spot. E.J."Lucky" Baldwin winery is only building seen on knoll. There is an "x" on reverse side to mark location. This photo belongs to the Huntington Library. It is shown here for research only.
Aerial view from east looking west over Santa Anita Race Track shortly after its opening. Baldwin Avenue shows just faintly as a white line above track barns. Note total absence of homes in what we call Santa Anita Village and Lower Rancho.
Aerial view looking down on Fashion Park from a position over intersection of Baldwin & Huntington Drive. Looking N toward Santa Anita Race Track grandstand during racing season (all of the cars parked on light-surfaced parking area are attending races.)
Aerial view looking east along Huntington Drive taken over the Club House at Santa Anita Park Race Track. Pony Express Museum is just to right of the "y" intersection of Huntington Drive coming into Arcadia just below the wing of the plane. Theater that was opened in 1942 is almost directly opposite Museum. Santa Anita Motor Inn, two buildings east of theater, distinguished by tall tower, opened in 1938. (It was torn down in 1975.) The residential area directly north of there is known as Santa Anita Gardens. Santa Anita Avenue is just beyond Arcadia County Park on right.
Aerial view looking east into Arcadia from near intersection of Rosemead Boulevard and Colorado Boulevard. Eaton's Santa Anita Hotel and Restaurant is still seen at far end of curve on south side of Colorado Boulevard and Michillinda Avenue (this is present site of Coco's Restaurant and Oak Tree Banquet Room, formerly Reuben's Restaurant, address 1150 W. Colorado Boulevard). The Santa Fe Railroad Tracks are seen just north of Colorado Boulevard. Large clear area in upper right portion of photo is Santa Anita Park Race Track.
Aerial view looking north across Santa Anita Park from a position over Arcadia County Park. Large infield crowd is evident and all parking areas are filled. Arcadia Methodist Hospital shows in lower left part of photo and Arcadia Police facility is seen in lower right. The 210 Foothill Freeway cuts across photo near the top.
Aerial view looking northeast across Santa Anita Park toward mountains. Note training track called Anita Chiquita has been added (lower left corner), open grandstand has been added to west of covered stand. Note, too, that work has begun to change Balloon School site to Arcadia County Park. Santa Anita Avenue is tree-lined street running entire width of photo about middle of print.
Aerial view looking west over Santa Anita Park. Photo was taken from about over intersection of Colorado Place and Huntington Drive. Note area that was to become Los Angeles County Arboretum across top of photo. Note an open Grandstand has been added to the west of original covered one. There is a small dirigible in lower right corner carrying a sign that seems to read:modern motel. Present Baldwin Avenue would run where road in this photo is seen parallel to top of photo.
Aerial view of Rancho Santa Anita taken above Dairy, looking north, with 5,000,000 gallon reservoir in lower left, and Baldwin's one mile training track built in 1876 with stud barn buildings on south end of track. Eaton's Santa Anita at Colorado Boulevard and Michillinda Avenue just visible at top of photo.
Aerial view, of the white A-Frame roof of Santa Anita Church (address is 226 West Colorado Boulevard, Arcadia, California). A six-sided, hexagon building near Santa Anita Church is the Fireside Room and Fellowship Hall, which is part of the Santa Anita Church. The church property goes all the way to Colorado Place (including "The Village Apartments," formerly the Frontier Motel, which the church purchased in 1972) and includes the parking lot and the building at the top of the photo, the Margaret Stevens Center. Aerial view showing Eaton's Santa Anita in foreground, looking south from Colorado Boulevard and Michillinda Avenue. Lucky Baldwin's one mile training track built in 1876 is visible with stud barn buildings on south end of track.
Aerial view taken from about over what became Campus Drive and Arcadia High School, and looking toward (NW) Pasadena and Sierra Madre at foot of San Gabriel Mountains. Photo shows Santa Anita Park Race Track possibly just a few years after opening.
Aerial view taken looking southeast from position about over present Arboretum. Photo shows Santa Anita Park, probably in opening season. Present City Hall sits in area just beyond cars parked at east end of track. Part of oval of old Santa Anita track built by Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin is seen in upper portion of photo, in area that is now Arcadia County Park. Duarte Road is seen crossing photo in upper right corner. Present Arcadia County Park area is in this photo, bordered on the north by Pacific Electric Railroad tracks. A train has just brought a group to the races and they are seen walking in center of photo. White square seen near right side, is slab left from hangars when U.S. Army Balloon School occupied this site, 1917-1927.
Aerial view toward east of Santa Anita Race Track with enormous crowd. It may possibly be opening day or shortly thereafter judging by small size of trees planted along edge of property.
Almost same scene as photo #169 but taken a few minutes later with balloon touching down. Buildings and 2 tents show on left side of photo. Row of Eucalyptus trees show all across background of photo.
Almost square building standing under tall Eucalyptus trees with sign across front reading: ARCADIA INN,WM. JOHNSON PROPRIETOR. According to information given to Sandy Snider at the Arboretum in a telephone interview with Vesta Reeves, this was known as Johnson's Inn and was on the SE corner of Santa Anita Avenue and Foothill Boulevard.
Another exterior view of 100-to-1 cocktail bar at 100 W. Huntington Drive. This horse racing themed bar was demolished 2015. Murals inside were salvaged by Gilb Museum. Photograph by Terry Miller.
Another view of Oakwood Hotel just after being destroyed by fire. Standing beside structure are an older and younger sister of Vesta Tucker Reeves. Their father was Lowen Tucker, ranch foreman for Elias J."Lucky" Baldwin.
Apparently a visitors' time at Ross Field Balloon School. Photo shows balloon aloft with basket suspended. Many people in photo. Closest to camera is left to right: man, boy, and four women. Eucalyptus trees all across background.
