According to the reapportionment plan passed Tuesday by the Democratic majority in the state legislature, the 26th district's boundaries have been changed. The newly created district still includes Arcadia.
Adam Schiff has proposed a plan under which ten cities along the planned Gold Line extension route would gain effective control over the project's construction.

The building (we see only roof) in the lower left corner is Vernon's Pharmacy. The letters VGS can be seen over front entry. There are probably about 100 autos parked nearby. After a 13-hour meeting, Arcadia City Council voted unanimously to approve the outdoor mall to be built on the Santa Anita Park race track parking lot, a development known as The Shops at Santa Anita. Opponents may push a referendum and possibly file lawsuits to block the project.
After a five-year hiatus, Arcadia City Council is considering reinstating a policy that would let property owners pay to be assigned a more auspicious house number, which some believe would improve the value of their home. The number 4 in a street address is considered a bad omen in many Asian cultures. In Mandarin language, the word "four" sounds like the word for death, while the number eight is considered lucky, because it sounds like the word for prosper. Arcadia's Asian population is approaching 60% and most potential buyers will be Asian. In a 3-2 vote, Arcadia City Council endorsed the move in principle and directed staff to report back on the costs involved.
After narrowly rejecting a Target Department Store as a suitable use for a property on Huntington Drive Tuesday night, the Arcadia City Council will have to await another proposal if it still plans to redevelop the property. The vote was 2-2 with and abstention. the measure needed 3 votes to win.
After presentations by 3 architectural firms Tuesday night, the Arcadia City Council voted 4-1 to ask one of the companies back for further discussion on doing a master plan for the city's proposed civic center project. The proposed center would probably be located on the Huntington Drive median where the city hall and police station are now located. Mayor David Hannah indicated that this could be a long-term project, perhaps lasting as long as 20 years.
After receiving intense pressure from San Gabriel Valley lawmakers, the county's transportation board, the MTA, finally put the Gold Line extension in its long-term plans. This opens up the possibility of federal funding for the project. With this commitment, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has agreed to provide day-to-day operational funding for the first phase of the Gold Line Foothill extension once it is completed.
After three tries, the Arcadia City Council agreed to appoint Peter Ulrich, an Arcadia Beautiful Commissioner and a real estate consultant, as the newest member of the panel.
After two weeks of delays, construction work has resumed along the downtown stretch of Huntington Drive and First Ave. City officials have hired a new contractor.
All-city picnic will be held October 12 to fete the Bicentennial. Music, games, etc. are being planned by the Special Events Committee of the Arcadia Bicentennial Commission.
