As their own volunteer project, local boys from Arcadia acquire shelving and install it at Bienvenidos Children's Center in Altadena. Sam Pievac Co. in Santa Fe Springs donated the shelves.
Arcadia resident Rick Landis and his partners, Bonnie and Glenn Watje of Whittier, who operate the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet, will receive the Good Scout of the Year Award.
Arcadia Methodist Hospital opened a new four-level parking structure this week, completing the first phase of its expansion. The second phase will include a 152,000 square feet, five-story patient tower, with a bridge connecting the top three floors to the existing Berger Patient Tower. The new North Tower, to be completed in 2010, will house a new emergency department, medical and surgical inpatient beds, two intensive care units, and a pharmacy.
Tournament of Roses Queen Alexandra Wucetich and her court ride under the parade route in a Metro Gold Line tunnel. Metro Gold Line follows the same Atchison/Topeka Santa Fe Railroad right of way that has provided passengers and freight service for nearly 100 years. Meredith Brucker of Arcadia (in photo) is one of many television viewers frustrated with the switch from analog to digital television that happened on June 12. Viewers using the digital converter boxes are complaining of problems receiving certain channels, that the picture freezes, and it takes several seconds for channels to change.
The Los Angeles Conservancy gave an F grade to Arcadia, Bradbury, Diamond Bar, El Monte, Industry, La Habra Heights, La Mirada, Monterey Park, Rosemead, Santa Fe Springs, Temple City and Walnut, in a report card of local cities. The cities were judged on whether or not they had an ordinance allowing designation of historic landmarks, how many landmarks are designated, if cities provide for implementation of the Mills Act and other criteria.
On February 23, the Arcadia chapter of the Rotary International Club will unveil and dedicate an old-time tower clock to the City of Arcadia. Rotary International celebrates its 100th anniversary next week.
The Arcadia Board of Education will lease 200 square feet of property at Dana Middle School to AT&T to install a cellular phone tower. The lease will be for 5 years with a minimum bid of $18,000 per year.
Arcadia officials approve expansion and seismic retrofitting plans for Arcadia Methodist Hospital. Expansion plans include a new five-story patient tower, a new ambulance bay, a larger emergency room and a larger critical care unit.
Arcadia Methodist Hospital celebrated its 53rd Annual Holiday Homes Tour. All proceeds go to support The Next Generation of Care campaign, toward a new patient tower, expanded Emergency department, and additional ICU beds.
Arcadia Methodist Hospital received a $4 million gift from philanthropists Tom and Bea Hollfelder, the largest outright gift made by individual donors in the hospital's 106 year history. In recognition of their donation, the first floor of the new hospital tower, scheduled to open in 2012, will be named the Hollfelder Emergency Care Center.
