Looking toward east side of Baldwin in first block south of Duarte Road. Newsom's Bootery was at 1206 S. Baldwin. Cars parked parallel to the curb in front of the shops.
Front view of brick building, probably built as a home in 1930's, but used primarily as a business. It is located at 22 E. Foothill Blvd, south side. There is a large (bare) jacaranda tree on right side of entrance in this photo.
View of intersection of Baldwin and Duarte Road with Renshaw's service station on NE corner. There is a real estate office in small square building further east on Duarte with a car parked in front. There is a man standing near door into station.
View of west side of Baldwin looking north from intersection with Naomi Avenue. Street trees obscure names of most shops but Nash's Department Store and Hinshaw's Department Store are visible.
Looking west across Baldwin Avenue to southwest corner of Baldwin Avenue and Naomi at Shopping Bag Market. It operated here from the early 1940's to 1970.
View NE across Baldwin Avenue at two-story Frank Grote home at 1128 S. Baldwin. This is NE corner of Baldwin Avenue and Duarte Road. Note ARCADIA sign over Duarte Road showing on right edge of photo.
Building at 22 E. Foothill Blvd (south side), built c. 1930, and used as both a residence and a business. This view is from the sidewalk in front and a bit west of building.
Corpe brothers garage and machine shop with truck parked in front of shop at 50 La Porte Street, Arcadia. Standing by truck, left to right: Enos Corpe, ?, Bill Cooper, mechanic, and Clint Corpe with hand on front of truck. Truck has printed on it: Dairy Fertilizer, which was another business run by the Corpe brothers.
Three views of business areas in Arcadia. On left is south side of Huntington Drive. Arcadia Hardware is still located at 52 E. Huntington Drive as it is shown here. On the right is the Bank of Italy which was located on NE corner of Huntington Drive and First Ave. The building just to the north up First Ave (with awnings) is also still in use.
View of west end and front of house at 22 E. Foothill Blvd. House was apparently used as a residence and later, for a business. Foothill Blvd is clearly in view toward east.
Looking west across intersection of Baldwin and Duarte Road to Hinshaw's Department Store, which was located at 1201 S. Baldwin. The street trees planted by the City of Arcadia are seen as an attractive addition to the street. Hinshaw's went out of business in 1992.
View of front drive and entry of Clara Baldwin home, reported to have been built in 1906, located at 291 W. Foothill Boulevard. Station wagon parked in front.
Shoemaker Al Yarter standing out in front of shops he built on North First Ave. The family lived in the house between the two shops. Mr. Yarter's grandson, Pat Carlin, told us in 1980 that Mr. Yarter bought the land from Anita Baldwin for a stated price. Later, he was told by an agent, that because the lot was within the lighting district, he would need to pay an additional amount. When Mr. Yarter spoke directly to Anita Baldwin about this, she said it had been her mistake and he would pay only what had been agreed upon. Groceries on the left and Arcadia Shoe Shop on the right.
View west of bungalow with chimney on east side. In 1939 City Directory, this was called Ivy Cottage Restaurant, at 22 E. Foothill. In 1931-32 City Directory, listed as Gansers Ltd. - Preserves. This was the first time this address showed in the city directory, so building apparently dates to 1930. Last business to use it was the Copy Cat custom dress design shop.
Looking east on Duarte Road, from the intersection at Baldwin Avenue. Businesses on the south side of Duarte Road include Cal Fed Bank, Business Bank, Borland's Physical Therapy, and Essentials for Hair. Five cars face westward, while a Honda Accord turns left onto Duarte Road.
