17 year old Angie Zamorano's death last week in a car accident less than a mile from Arcadia High School brought 300 people together Tuesday for a memorial service at Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora.

The Citrus Community College District encompasses Azusa, Bradbury, Claremont, Duarte, Glendora, Monrovia, and portions of San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Arcadia, Covina and Irwindale. The district enrolls more than 20,000 students.
Another homeless village set to open in Baldwin Park. 16-unit tiny home complex will house families in need. It's called Serenity Homes, 13167 Garvey Avenue in Baldwin Park. Senator Susan Rubio, D-West Covina, celebrated the opening with elected officials from all over the San Gabriel Valley, including from Arcadia, Azusa, Glendora, La Puente, Monrovia, San Marino, South Pasadena, Temple City and Mount San Antonio College. It is the second tiny homes village opening in Baldwin Park within a year and serves as a model for how cities can expand homeless services.
Arcadia Apaches roller hockey team won the San Gabriel Valley Roller Hockey League Championships by defeating Glendora 3-1. The Apaches, who use the name and logo of Arcadia High School, do not have an official affiliation with the school, but the team consists of high school age Arcadia residents, the majority of whom go to Arcadia High School.
Arcadia doctor arrested. Dr. Badrudin Rajabali Kurwa was arrested on October 22 for alleged sexual battery of two employees in his Glendora office. Dr. Kurwa practices as an ophthamologist in both Arcadia and Glendora.
The City of LaVerne has joined the Foothill Special Enforcement Team (FSET), a partnership of SWAT teams formed between Monrovia, Arcadia and Glendora. Officers with FSET are deployed to manage high risk incidents such as hostage situations, barricaded subjects and potentially dangerous arrests.

Hurricane strength winds blew through the San Gabriel Valley early yesterday, damaging buildings, downing trees and knocking out power to thousands across the region. Temple City, Sierra Madre, San Marino and Pasadena were especially hard hit by the 70 mph winds that left a trail of destruction from Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles to Irwindale and Azusa. Several cities, including Pasadena, Sierra Madre, Monrovia, Arcadia, Glendora, Alhambra and South Pasadena have been declared states of emergency. Jonathan Robert Poyner, 20, of Glendora, a part-time employee at Rio Hondo Prep School in Arcadia, is accused of lewd acts on a child under 14 and two counts of attempted molestation.

Last Tuesday's election showed that most of the San Gabriel Valley voted for Democrats--Governor-elect Jerry Brown and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer. The majority of voters in Arcadia, Bradbury, Glendora, La Mirada, San Dimas and San Marino voted for the Republican candidates.
L-Line Extension. Claremont Councilman Ed Reece to chair light rail line board, the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority Board of Directors. The extension of the L-Line (formerly Gold Line) from Glendora to Pomona is 40% finished and scheduled for completion in early 2025. Reece will oversee the extension to Claremont and Montclair. The light rail line serves Arcadia, Pasadena, East Los Angeles and Los Angeles's Chinatown.
Local transit authorities are preparing to move forward with the Gold Line Foothill Extension to the Azusa-Glendora border and local cities are planning to place residential and commercial developments along the line. Those developments are intended to prepare for future population growth. The first phase of the extension is slated to be completed by 2014, adding new stops in Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and Azusa. Some plans near those stops could be scaled back due to the down economy. Arcadia officials are looking to build commercial developments centered on a planned station just east of Santa Anita Avenue. Arcadia's challenge will be land acquisition. Because Arcadia has ordinances limiting the use of eminent domain, Arcadia officials have to rely on negotiating land deals, a difficult process with limited redevelopment funds.

Home to approximately 709,231 people, this district has been represented by Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park) since 2013. Most residents of District 27 are Asian (37.94%), White (29.22%), or Hispanic (26.88%).
