Aerial view. Looking east. Street along right edge of photo which is lined with trees is Duarte Road. Santa Anita Avenue cuts across photo from right to left and up into the San Gabriel Mountains. Huntington Drive can be seen in center of photo with young trees planted on north side of it. Santa Anita Race Track is one furthest from camera. The next small track is a training track belonging to Santa Anita. There is a VERY small round track across the street from the training track, which was part of a private horse stables. The incompleted oval was part of work done in 1933 by Joe Smoot and Anita Baldwin in their effort to develop the Jockey Club Track. This photo belongs to the Huntington Library. Aerial view looking south over Santa Anita Race Track on a day of very heavy attendance. The floral plantings which form designs in the in-field are shown clearly. Also seen are: the clubhouse, the stables, and the training track. These latter were either moved or done away with to make way for the Fashion Park. Street closest to camera is First Avenue, running north/south, and we see its intersection with Wheeler Avenue in lower left portion of photo. Almost vacant lot on northwest corner of Wheeler Avenue and First Avenue is where Sawmill Restaurant was built in about 1977 (Sawmill Restaurant closed in early 1990's). Foundation work on South side of Wheeler Avenue at corner of First Avenue is for medical building which became 65 N. First Avenue. (Former site of Arcadia Public Library until 1961.) Post Office is largest building in center of the block on north side of Wheeler Avenue. Large white area is parking area for Santa Anita Park Race Track.

Aerial view toward NE. Plane is over property of Charles W. Stewart (10 acres), and Jaspar Teague (10 acres), at 1320 S. Santa Anita Avenue, which is directly under the plane. Next street east is First Avenue, then Second Avenue, the Fourth Avenue. Reservoir is at corner of Valnett Avenue and Second Avenue and was owned by Walnut Grove Mutual Water Company (Valnett Avenue was first through street south of Duarte Road at this time and became Camino Real).
Aerial view west toward Santa Anita Ave. from above First Avenue, site of new grammar school. Long driveway heads to Jaspar N. Teague home in center of 10 acre orange grove. (Address in City Directory for this name is 1380 S. Santa Anita.) House to left and south was that of Charles W. Stewart in another 10 acre plot. Both ranches are now occupied by First Avenue Junior High School.

American Lutheran Church, then at 1424 S. Baldwin, which was later home of Serbian Orthodox Church. Building was dedicated Nov. 12, 1939, enlarged in 1945 and sold in 1963 to Serbian Orthodox, when Lutheran congregation's new church was built on Duarte Road.
Another view of "Smoot Hole" before cleaning up and just before subdividing for El Rancho Village. The name Smoot Hole came from aborted effort of Joe Smoot and Anita Baldwin to get race track built in about this location.
Apparently taken in the High School gymnasium which has been decorated for special event. Many students are seated at tables, for what probably was a dinner following graduation.

Arcadia Recreation Department event "Arcadia Pet Show." A young girl named Robin Williams kneels next to two dogs. Frodo is the small dog and Contessa is the big dog. Written on back of photograph is "2nd Special, July 13, 1974." Stamped on back is "Milton K. Bell, Photographer, 174 N. Madison Ave., Monrovia, CA. July 11, 1974."
Arcadia's first school house which was made over from a packing shed given by Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin. This photo shows 26 people, students and teachers standing at door. It was located at corner of Santa Anita Avenue and Falling Leaf Drive. (street name later changed to Huntington Drive). Used from 1903-1907. Only Julian Fisher identified.
Bali House through the jungle in the north shore at lake at the Arboretum. Part of set for the filming of "A Honeymoon in Bali," starring Madelene Carrol and Fred McMurray. Originally it was to be named "Are Husbands Necessary." Directed by F.H. Griffith, June-July, 1939. Gate shows in front of photo with house in rear. Part of house on right side of photo is draped with what looks like a black cloth.
Brown shingled house with granite stone chimney and unique floor to ceiling windows by front entry. Brick terrace forms entry. Word persists from people in the area, that house was built by a former Cabinet Officer. A title search was done on the house for us in 1975: the one name on list of owners that is a possibility is MELLON. (In article written by Claire Charles and numbered #4 in Arcadia-Peacocks, on p.23, top of page, she mentions Annie Mellon as living in this house.) Address if 330 E. Duarte Rd. Built c. 1913.
Cast of moving picture, THE HEART OF A RACE TOUT, the first moving picture made ENTIRELY in California. It was made by Selig Polyscope Co.of Chicago who had opened a studio in downtown Los Angeles. The movie was made to take advantage of the Racetrack built in Arcadia by E.J."Lucky" Baldwin which opened in 1907.
