About 12 girls in white are seen walking across the lawn at front of First Avenue School (Arcadia Grammar School at this time, 1935). They have garlands of flowers over their shoulders to commemorate their graduation from 8th grade. Photo is also interesting because construction scaffolding is across front of school.

About ten thoroughbreds and jockeys, round turn toward finish of a race at Santa Anita Park. San Gabriel Mountains loom up behind. One can tell that this is early years of the track because of the dust kicked up by horses. Later, track was completely excavated and new improved mixture was put in place.

Aerial looking west from a position just east of First Avenue and just north of Wheeler Avenue. Large white barn-like roof is San Gabriel Valley Lumber Co. building. This later became the Sawmill Restaurant and in the early 1990's became Sports Rock Cafe. Directly opposite, is cleared land where Arcadia Public Library, Fire and Police were previously located. Today there is a Medical Building on the site (65 N. First Avenue). Santa Anita Park and parking lot are seen in the distance.

Almost vacant lot on northwest corner of Wheeler Avenue and First Avenue is where Sawmill Restaurant was built in about 1977 (Sawmill Restaurant closed in early 1990's). Foundation work on South side of Wheeler Avenue at corner of First Avenue is for medical building which became 65 N. First Avenue. (Former site of Arcadia Public Library until 1961.) Post Office is largest building in center of the block on north side of Wheeler Avenue. Large white area is parking area for Santa Anita Park Race Track.

This appears to be intersection of Las Tunas and Temple City Blvd. Building seen at top of photo is probably Vernon's Pharmacy of Temple City, located on NW corner of this intersection. There is a companion photo to this photo, #643. Vera Van Iaawarden, who lives in Temple City, says her father believes this was a balloon ascension.

The location has been identified as near intersection of Las Tunas Drive and (with what seem to be railroad tracks in center) Temple City Boulevard. The building (we see only roof) in the lower left corner is Vernon's Pharmacy. The letters VGS can be seen over front entry. There are probably about 100 autos parked nearby. Reservoir is at corner of Valnett Avenue and Second Avenue and was owned by Walnut Grove Mutual Water Company (Valnett Avenue was first through street south of Duarte Road at this time and became Camino Real).
