Car sitting alongside Holly Avenue at property just purchased by Aloyosius Mauch and his family near Palm Avenue and Holly Avenue. This view is toward NE.
Aerial view looking east along Huntington Drive taken over the Club House at Santa Anita Park Race Track. Pony Express Museum is just to right of the "y" intersection of Huntington Drive coming into Arcadia just below the wing of the plane. Theater that was opened in 1942 is almost directly opposite Museum. Santa Anita Motor Inn, two buildings east of theater, distinguished by tall tower, opened in 1938. (It was torn down in 1975.) The residential area directly north of there is known as Santa Anita Gardens. Santa Anita Avenue is just beyond Arcadia County Park on right.
Twelve people are seen picking strawberries on the Mauch ranch at Palm Avenue and Holly Avenue. All are wearing hats. The large white-colored hangars still standing on the Balloon School property can be seen behind the trees in left half of photo.
Aerial view toward north from a position south of Huntington Drive near intersection with Baldwin Avenue. It shows Santa Anita Fashion Park (currently known as Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Mall) developed by and on property owned by Santa Anita Consolidated. The Santa Anita Park Race Track and club house can be seen in center of photo. The straight white line about one inch above the club house roof is 210 Foothill Freeway. Chantry Flats road can be seen going up into San Gabriel Mountains in distance.
Aerial view of what appears to be either an informal horse show or possible horse sale with a great number of people in attendance. The location has been identified as near intersection of Las Tunas Drive and (with what seem to be railroad tracks in center) Temple City Boulevard. The building (we see only roof) in the lower left corner is Vernon's Pharmacy. The letters VGS can be seen over front entry. There are probably about 100 autos parked nearby. (There is another photo of this event, #539.)
Church of Transfiguration is now located where this view shows. Path in photo is First Avenue of today. Shows what appears to be orchard and possible strawberry patch on left side of photo between First and Second Avenues.
Unknown lady standing on street curbing beside three large palm trees which adjoin a citrus orchard. Location in city is not known, but possibly Santa Anita. Note deep curbs to control rain run-off.
Aerial view toward the east taken from about over present Club House at Santa Anita Park Race Track. The main street running North/South is Santa Anita Avenue. View shows the oval of Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin's race track in what is currently Arcadia County Park. The buildings would be barracks of Ross Field U.S. Army Balloon School. Duarte Road can be seen coming into photo at right edge of photo near intersection with Santa Anita Avenue. The broad street along left side would be Huntington Drive. Railroad tracks can be seen in lower left corner.
Newly planted strawberries are seen covered by paper cups for protection. Mr. Mauch said they learned to do this from their Japanese neighbors. This view is looking north toward mountains from Mauch ranch at Holly Avenue and Palm Avenue.
Home of Charles and Pearl Strong at 460 W. Duarte Road. View shows small clapboard house standing by itself. There is a high-sided trailer standing at left of house. What appears to be chicken houses show in the photo. Claimed to be first white leghorn chicken ranch in Arcadia.
Aerial view taken from about over what became Campus Drive and Arcadia High School, and looking toward (NW) Pasadena and Sierra Madre at foot of San Gabriel Mountains. Photo shows Santa Anita Park Race Track possibly just a few years after opening.
Aerial view north. Main tree-lined street is Santa Anita Avenue. Most of the orange grove in center of photo was owned by Jaspar Teague family. They had built a circular art gallery on their property at 1380 South Santa Anita Avenue. The large buildings north of Teague's and to the west of Santa Anita Avenue are chicken houses. Duarte Road is the east/west street across photo near top of photo.
View northeast over Pacific Electric Railroad. Ross Field Balloon School occupies portion on right side of photo over to the railroad tracks. The street marking its northern boundary would be Huntington Drive. The large rectangle just north of this street was Rancho Resevoir, converted into a swimming pool. The principal street marking east boundary of Balloon School property running north to south across this photo about at middle, is Santa Anita Avenue.
Aerial view toward NE. Plane is over property of Charles W. Stewart (10 acres), and Jaspar Teague (10 acres), at 1320 S. Santa Anita Avenue, which is directly under the plane. Next street east is First Avenue, then Second Avenue, the Fourth Avenue. Reservoir is at corner of Valnett Avenue and Second Avenue and was owned by Walnut Grove Mutual Water Company (Valnett Avenue was first through street south of Duarte Road at this time and became Camino Real).
Aerial view, of the white A-Frame roof of Santa Anita Church (address is 226 West Colorado Boulevard, Arcadia, California). A six-sided, hexagon building near Santa Anita Church is the Fireside Room and Fellowship Hall, which is part of the Santa Anita Church. The church property goes all the way to Colorado Place (including "The Village Apartments," formerly the Frontier Motel, which the church purchased in 1972) and includes the parking lot and the building at the top of the photo, the Margaret Stevens Center. Aerial view looking towards San Gabriel Mountains showing intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Huntington Drive, the Santa Anita Park and training track where Santa Anita Fashion Park (currently known as Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Mall) was built.
Santa Anita Park Race Track just right of center at south edge of photo. Oval to the left of Santa Anita Park Race Track was training track which was removed to make room for Santa Anita Fashion Park (currently Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Mall). Street just to left of training track is Baldwin Avenue. Huntington Drive and Colorado Place form a "y" just east of Santa Anita Park Race Track. Along both can be noticed the conifer trees planted a few years earlier. Street completely bisecting photo just below center is Foothill Boulevard, next one is Orange Grove Avenue. Santa Anita Avenue is partially in view on right edge of photo. Oval on extreme lower left side of photo is old Baldwin training track. Baseball diamond in lower right corner is at Arcadia County Park. Scale: 1"=660'
