About 12 girls in white are seen walking across the lawn at front of First Avenue School (Arcadia Grammar School at this time, 1935). They have garlands of flowers over their shoulders to commemorate their graduation from 8th grade. Photo is also interesting because construction scaffolding is across front of school.
About 18 people are seen seated outdoors at tables under trees decorated with Japanese paper lanterns. A waiter stands by closest tree. Printed on photo are words: FAIRYLAND PARK BALDWIN'S RANCH.
"A Day at the Fair," Arcadia's 1969 float entry in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, featured spectators in the grandstand cheering, horses speeding down the homestretch during a day of racing at the fair. In front is a floral fountain. In the center is a revolving tableau with a peacock. A framed copy of this removed from wall outside Admin. office and currently stored in map case in basement, as of February 2017.
"Adventures in Paradise," Arcadia's float entry in the 1971 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, featured a banana split. A framed copy of this removed from wall outside Admin. office and currently stored in map case in basement, as of February 2017.
Aerial looking west from a position just east of First Avenue and just north of Wheeler Avenue. Large white barn-like roof is San Gabriel Valley Lumber Co. building. This later became the Sawmill Restaurant and in the early 1990's became Sports Rock Cafe. Directly opposite, is cleared land where Arcadia Public Library, Fire and Police were previously located. Today there is a Medical Building on the site (65 N. First Avenue). Santa Anita Park and parking lot are seen in the distance.
Aerial view due south from a position almost directly over sharp curve of Colorado Street. Showing in this photo are the Track and Club House on a day of large attendance, the stables, and a training track. All along Huntington Drive and Colorado Street young trees have been planted. Old-time resident Reid Greer says that the large tree at the very left edge of photo about 2 1/2 in. from bottom is same tree as seen in photo #654, on flat ground just below knolls seen here, and therefore he places homes of Indians on ranch at this spot. E.J."Lucky" Baldwin winery is only building seen on knoll. There is an "x" on reverse side to mark location. This photo belongs to the Huntington Library. It is shown here for research only.
Aerial view from above Huntington Drive between Santa Anita Avenue and First Avenue. Huntington Drive intersects the photo from north to south. The street closest to the bottom is First Avenue and Santa Anita Avenue is near the top.
Aerial view looking south over Santa Anita Race Track on a day of very heavy attendance. The floral plantings which form designs in the in-field are shown clearly. Also seen are: the clubhouse, the stables, and the training track. These latter were either moved or done away with to make way for the Fashion Park. Main gate was at NE corner of Huntington Drive and Baldwin, which was not cut through at that time. This photo belongs to the Huntington Library. It is shown here for research only.
Aerial view looking west from a position approximately over Santa Fe railroad tracks between First Avenue and Second Avenue. Street closest to camera is First Avenue, running north/south, and we see its intersection with Wheeler Avenue in lower left portion of photo. Almost vacant lot on northwest corner of Wheeler Avenue and First Avenue is where Sawmill Restaurant was built in about 1977 (Sawmill Restaurant closed in early 1990's). Foundation work on South side of Wheeler Avenue at corner of First Avenue is for medical building which became 65 N. First Avenue. (Former site of Arcadia Public Library until 1961.) Post Office is largest building in center of the block on north side of Wheeler Avenue. Large white area is parking area for Santa Anita Park Race Track.
Aerial view of large group of people, many on horses, apparently taking part in either an informal rodeo, or possibly a horse sale. This appears to be intersection of Las Tunas and Temple City Blvd. Building seen at top of photo is probably Vernon's Pharmacy of Temple City, located on NW corner of this intersection. There is a companion photo to this photo, #643. Vera Van Iaawarden, who lives in Temple City, says her father believes this was a balloon ascension.
Aerial view toward NE. Plane is over property of Charles W. Stewart (10 acres), and Jaspar Teague (10 acres), at 1320 S. Santa Anita Avenue, which is directly under the plane. Next street east is First Avenue, then Second Avenue, the Fourth Avenue. Reservoir is at corner of Valnett Avenue and Second Avenue and was owned by Walnut Grove Mutual Water Company (Valnett Avenue was first through street south of Duarte Road at this time and became Camino Real).
Aerial view toward SW from position just north of Santa Anita Race Track with large crowd in attendance. View shows planting design on the infield, the clubhouse, and to the west, the former training track belonging to Santa Anita. This and stables were removed or relocated to make room for the Fashion Park. Baldwin Avenue was not cut through at this time. This photo belongs to the Huntington Library. It is shown here for research only.
Alfred Paredes of AP Sculpture Studio is the sculptor (wearing shorts and cap), standing to the right, of the Lucky Baldwin statue called "A Dawn in the West." Photo was taken after the patina was completed at Art Bronze Foundry in Burbank, CA. The two on the left of the statue are artisans who applied the patina. The statue is now located at the Reverend Monsignor Gerald M. O'Keeffe Rose Garden near the Arcadia Community Center at 365 Campus Drive. Printed on inkjet from a JPEG file.
American Lutheran Church, then at 1424 S. Baldwin, which was later home of Serbian Orthodox Church. Building was dedicated Nov. 12, 1939, enlarged in 1945 and sold in 1963 to Serbian Orthodox, when Lutheran congregation's new church was built on Duarte Road.
"America the Beautiful," Arcadia's float entry in the 1962 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. Perched atop red, white and blue shield is a majestic eagle with wings spread. A framed copy of this removed from wall outside Admin. office and currently stored in map case in basement, as of February 2017.
Andy Griffith, movie & television personality on left. William Parker Lyon, Jr. center and unidentified person on right. Apparently this was taken at the time Harrah's in Reno, Nevada auctioned off items that formerly had been in Arcadia at Pony Express Museum and had been sold to Harrah's some years earlier.
An early view south across lagoon toward Hugo Reid Adobe. At this time, the adobe had been greatly enlarged by E.J."Lucky" Baldwin. There is a row boat on the lagoon with a man at oars. Adobe appears to be painted white. This photograph belongs to the Huntington Library. It is shown here for research only.
Anita Baldwin McClaughry, husband Hull McClaughry and son Baldwin taken at San Francisco's Panama Pacific Exposition, 1915. They are seated in a wicker carriage seat of some sort.
Another back view of abandoned caboose of a train. Train is marked with Pine Bluff SP 151 (clearer in photo 2258A). Looking northeast on train tracks near First Avenue, between Santa Clara Street and Saint Joseph Street in Arcadia, California. A building on First Avenue, north of the tracks, is barely visible in the background, middle left of photo. Photo by Terry Miller.
